Land of the Leopard and Russian Railways team up to fight wild fires

7 April 2016

A new fire line was ploughed at the border of Land of the Leopard National Park in the Khasan District of the Primorye Territory. Joint efforts with the Russian Railways Far Eastern Branch to ensure fire safety are part of an agreement signed on 21 March 2016, at an inter-agency meeting between the management of Land of the Leopard and the Russian Railways branch.

Sparks from passing trains on these routes often cause fire outbreaks in the dry grass. Fire lines, or mineralised strips ploughed by a tractor, create a wide gap between a dry grass area and the national park borders. These gaps can keep low fires from spreading or serve as a restricting line for controlled burns. The strip will soon be expanded, and the area adjacent to railway tracks will be cleared of highly flammable woody debris. Fire engine trains of the Russian Railways Far Eastern Branch are already operating on high alert.

"Along with poaching, wild fires are a serious threat to the biological diversity of the national park. It is a constant issue for Land of the Leopard National Park. Cooperation with Far Eastern Railways is a big step towards improving the situation during the fire danger period," said Tatyana Baranovskaya, director of Land of the Leopard National Park.

By the beginning of the fire danger period, Land of the Leopard state inspectors have improved 45 km of fire lines in the national park. This figure will double soon. Additionally, over 70 fire warning signs will be installed in the woods and around local towns.
