New feeding sites constructed at Land of the Leopard

15 October 2015

In anticipation of cold weather, the construction of feeding sites for hoofed animals has started at Land of the Leopard National Park. They are being built in the park’s restricted area, in places to which animals have already become accustomed.

According to the expert, this winter might be hard for sika deer and roe deer, which are the leopard’s staples. Anticipating difficulties with food that hoofed animals might encounter, the park’s management is going to build new roofed feeding sites.

“Currently, two feeding sites have already been built behind the border guards’ engineering facilities. Roofed feeding sites have an important advantage compared to open ones, as they protect food from falls. Food does not freeze, so animals can eat it more easily,” Georgy Likhachyov, deputy head of the forest management at Land of the Leopard, said in an interview.

This year, fodder will be delivered to several dozen sites, some of which will be equipped with salt licks. About 500 hay rolls and 150 tonnes of cereal will be purchased. The purchase of fodder and the construction of feeding sites are held with the support of the Far Eastern Leopards autonomous non-profit organisation.
