The memory card of a camera trap in the Kedrovaya Pad Reserve revealed new photographs of the female leopard Kedrovka’s cub named Bary, one of the stars of the web series “Spotted Family”.
“Normally this camera captures images of just two adult leopards – Kedrovka and Meamur,” Anna Vitkalova, head of the research division at Land of the Leopard National Park, said. “But this time I immediately realised that I was looking at a young animal, probably a female. We compared photographs of different cubs with the help of a specialised programme and discovered that it was Leo 04 – Bary.”
Judging by the images, Bary is in good physical shape, which means she has no problem hunting. Bary was the quietest cub featured in “Spotted Family,” which is a gender trait. To preserve their young, female leopards must be as cautious and inconspicuous as possible.
“Far Eastern leopards’ daughters often stay on or near their mother’s territory,” Yelena Salmanova, Deputy Director for Science and Environmental Education at Land of the Leopard, said. “Sons behave differently. As a rule, they leave their mother and roam far and wide. This is why we don’t know where Bary’s two brothers, Krym and Shustry, are now. We hope to get photographs of them in spring, when we check all our photo and video trail cameras.”
The web series “Spotted Family” followed a female Far Eastern leopard called Kedrovka and her three cubs. The second season ended in mid-summer of 2014, when the grown cubs were about to leave their mother. Land of the Leopard staff had seen no trace of them until now.
