Land of the Leopard National Park receives protection zone

16 January 2013

Primorye Governor Vladimir Miklushevsky signed a decree to establish a protected buffer zone at Land of the Leopard National Park, to mitigate the industrial impact on endangered Far Eastern leopards. The zone borders on game reserves and timber allotments.

The zone will occupy 82,000 hectares in the Khasan and Nadezhdino districts and the Ussuri municipal district, adjacent to the park. Though the plots were not taken from the land owners, the protected zone status limits their activities to ensure a wildlife-friendly environment. In particular, the zone statute bans keeping dogs and setting traps, and stipulates the presence of observer experts during team hunting.

All areas populated by Far Eastern leopards, which Sergei Ivanov mentioned in his report to the Russian Geographical Society during its meeting in 2010, and which total 360,000 hectares in southwestern Primorye, have varied protection statuses.
