Far Eastern leopard arrives at Barnaul Zoo

28 November 2011

A Far Eastern leopard has arrived at Barnaul Zoo. The leopard, named Elisei, was transferred for permanent residence today.

This rare animal is on the brink of extinction and is included on the international endangered species list. It is expected that Elisei will remain the crown jewel of the Barnaul zoo for the next 20 years. Leopards live between 10 and 15 years in the wild. Elisei is eighteen months old. The Far Eastern leopard is the rarest feline species, with no more than 30-35 individuals remaining in the wild.

This year, Barnaul Zoo saw a significant increase in the number of animals. Its collection was enriched entirely by representatives of rare and endangered species, such as lynx, moufflon, wild boar, swamp lynx and the Canadian wolf.
